1. Introduction

Screendex ("we", "our", or "us") operates the Screendex mobile application and website (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use the Service. Please read this policy carefully.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information you provide

  • Account information: email address, display name, and (optionally) a profile photo when you create an account.
  • Watchlist data: titles, ratings, watch status, notes, and any other content you add to your watchlist.
  • Share data: usernames or email addresses of people you choose to share lists with.

2.2 Information collected automatically

  • Usage data: pages visited, features used, and interactions within the app — used to improve the Service.
  • Device information: platform (iOS/Android/web), app version, and language settings.
  • Log data: timestamps, error reports, and anonymised request logs retained for up to 90 days.

2.3 Third-party sign-in

If you sign in with Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture from Google in accordance with the permissions you grant. We do not receive your Google password.

3. How We Use Your Information

  • To create and manage your account.
  • To provide, operate, and improve the Service.
  • To send transactional emails (password resets, share notifications). We do not send marketing emails without your explicit consent.
  • To respond to support requests.
  • To detect and prevent fraud or abuse.
  • To comply with legal obligations.

We do not sell your personal data to third parties.

4. Content Metadata (TMDB & OMDb)

When you search for movies or TV shows, your query is sent to our backend server, which calls The Movie Database (TMDB) and the Open Movie Database (OMDb) APIs on your behalf. No personal information is transmitted to these services — only the search query text. Results are displayed in-app and not stored beyond the duration of your session.

5. Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored on Google Cloud Platform infrastructure in the us-central1region. We use industry-standard measures including HTTPS in transit, AES-256 encryption at rest for sensitive fields, and Firebase Authentication's secure token storage. Authentication tokens on mobile devices are stored in Android Keystore / iOS Keychain via expo-secure-store.

No system is perfectly secure. While we take reasonable precautions, we cannot guarantee absolute security.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your personal data is deleted within 30 days. Anonymised aggregate analytics data may be retained indefinitely.

7. Sharing of Information

We do not share your personal data with third parties except in the following cases:

  • Service providers: Google Cloud Platform (hosting), Firebase (authentication and database), and TMDB/OMDb (content metadata lookup via our server).
  • Legal requirements: if required by law, court order, or governmental authority.
  • Business transfer: in the event of a merger, acquisition, or asset sale — users will be notified beforehand.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate data.
  • Request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten").
  • Export your data in a portable format.
  • Object to or restrict certain processing.

9. Children's Privacy

The Service is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

10. International Transfers

Your data is processed in the United States. If you are located outside the US, your data is transferred to and processed in the US under appropriate safeguards (Standard Contractual Clauses for EU/EEA users).

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by posting a notice in the app or sending an email. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
